Colin Kaepernick’s Anthem Controversy Will Make It Into ‘Madden 17’

You have to hand it to the people over at EA Sports, they really, really, want you to feel like their sports franchises are as close to real life as possible.

According to this GameSpot report, the commentary team from Madden 17 (Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis) will constantly record new voiceover work as the season progresses, discussing the latest league news. So not only will the game talk about big trades or heartbreaking injuries, but it will also mention the current controversy surrounding Colin Kaepernick. The San Francisco quarterback is currently refusing to stand for the national anthem before games, claiming that he won’t support the current level of oppression that occurs in the country.

“Kaepernick’s decision will be briefly mentioned in-game, reflecting our commitment to authenticity in Madden NFL 17,” said an EA Sports publicist. “Overall, our new commentary will mainly center around on-field performance, as well as major news like trades, free agency signings, and injuries.”

Kaepernick’s decision to protest has led to a number of current and former players to offer their opinions as well. Naturally, some think he is right to stand up for what he believes in. Others feel that he is being disrespectful to a country that allowed him to become a millionaire by playing a game.
