Almost everyone dies in Game of Thrones, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s a beloved hero or a hated villain. Even being the star of the show can’t necessarily save you from a grisly end in Westeros. Naturally, the producers spend a bug chunk of their budget on filming scenes where people die, since it seems like a couple characters bite the dust every episode.
During a recent SXSW panel, Game of Thrones showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff showrunners were asked which death cost the most the film. We would have assumed that the Red Wedding would be up there, along with possibly the deaths of Oberyn Martell or King Joffrey. We even thought of going all the way back to Season One, with the death of Ned Stark. But nope. None of those.
Weiss and Beinhoff revealed that the most expensive death scene in the series so far was when Arya Stark finally crossed kingsguard member Meryn Trant off her list in the Season Five finale. That was a surprise to us. Why did it cost so damn much?
“She couldn’t really poke out his eyes,” Benioff replied, according to MNE.
Turns out the special effects needed to stab out two eyeballs and then slit Trant’s throat were much more expensive than having The Mountain cave in The Viper’s skull. Who knew?
Here’s the scene, for those that need a reminder.
