Originally scheduled for release on May 24, 2019, Lucasfilm has announced that Star Wars fans will now have to wait quite a bit longer for Episode IX, which will hit theaters on December 20, 2019.

While Lucasfilm did not provide a reason for the delay, it’s safe to assume that the recent departure of director Colin Trevorrow and the subsequent hiring of J.J. Abrams to replace him has much to do with it. Trevorrow departed the production due to alleged friction with Lucasfilm, so it’s likely that the studio needs more time to get things sorted out and to bring Abrams up to speed.

The next film in the franchise, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, is due out December 15, 2017.
