If you walked into The Force Awakens hoping to see what an older, wiser Luke Skywalker was up to, you likely walked away just a tad disappointed considering Mark Hamill’s Star Wars hero had zero lines and only showed up in the very last minute of the film. That being said, if you’re a Luke Skywalker fan, you’ll probably be pleased by some recent comments Episode VIII director Rian Johnson made regarding the character’s role in the upcoming film.
Johnson made the following comments to USA Today over the weekend about what viewers can expect from both Luke and Rey (Daisy Ridley) in Episode VIII:
How Rey and Luke relate to each other is the key relationship in Episode VIII, and Johnson says “a large part of the movie” will be spent addressing why Luke’s there and what he’ll do next. Like Luke, Rey has been pulled into a bigger world by connecting with the Force, “but part of what’s she’s dealing with is the realization that she has this power and this gift,” Johnson adds. “She’s taking her first step to coming to terms with this thing inside her that she never knew was there and is just starting to reveal its potential.”
We figured that Luke and Rey would play a prominent role in the film, but Johnson’s reveal that they form the film’s key relationship is interesting and suggests that we’ll finally get some answers as to how Rey fits in to the wider Star Wars mythology.
Star Wars: Episode VIII will hit theaters Dec. 15th, 2017. God, we can’t wait for a trailer …
