With the recent announcement that Warner Bros. is working on multiple Joker movies involving multiple Jokers, it can be difficult to know exactly what the studio’s long term plan is for the popular DC villain … especially if you are an actor ostensibly playing one of those Jokers.

Jared Leto, who played the Clown Prince of Crime in Suicide Squad, is currently set to reprise the role in a Suicide Squad sequel and an untitled team-up movie with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. However, there is also a Joker origin movie in the works, with Martin Scorsese attached to produce and Todd Phillips lined up direct. The plan right now is to find a different actor to play the Joker in the latter film, which could effectively create a situation in which there are two different actors playing the character at the same time. And like everyone else, Leto isn’t sure what to make of it all.

“I’m a little confused, too,” said Leto during an interview at the launch of Destiny 2, of all things. Still, it sounds like the actor is being a good sport about the whole thing, and is willing to share the character with other actors: “I love the Joker. He’s a great character and really fun character to play. But it’s a big universe and when you play the Joker, there’s no ownership there. You have the honor of holding the baton for a little while and then passing it off. There are other films that are in development and I’m excited to see what comes from them,” he said.

Suicide Squad 2, the Joker and Harley movie, and whatever WB decides to call the Joker origins movie (probably Joker: Origins) are all in the early stages of development, so it will still be some time before the Jokepocalypse is upon us. We’re curious to see how it all plays out!
