Mario may still sport a pair of overalls, but it turns out that his days of being a full-time plumber are well behind him.

According to Nintendo’s official profile of Mario on its Japanese site (helpfully translated by Kotaku), the portly hero is described as:

“All around sporty, whether it’s tennis or baseball, soccor or car racing, [Mario] does everything cool. As a matter of fact, he also seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago…”

Mario canon has always been a bit hard to pin down — after all, we’re talking about an Italian plumber (sorry, former plumber) who rescues princesses from a fire-breathing turtle monster (and that’s just in the main Mario games) — so it’s interesting to hear that Nintendo considers all of Mario’s sports and kart-racing spin-offs to be official parts of his resume.

Of course, ever since Mario started branching off into every conceivable gaming genre — speaking of which, have you tried Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle yet? It’s quite good — we’ve known that he’s more than just your average plumber, but it still feels weird to see Nintendo officially acknowledge it.

Super Mario Odyssey, due out this October, gives Mario the ability to possess pretty much anything with his hat, so Nintendo should probably add “sorcerer” to his ever-expanding resume.
