To coincide with the launch of Metroid: Samus Returns on September 15, Nintendo has announced a special “Samus Edition” New 3DS XL system.

The limited edition handheld is priced at $200 USD and somewhat surprisingly, doesn’t include a copy of the aforementioned 3DS game. Still, it’s not everyday that you see Nintendo put out something new in the Metroid franchise — let alone a themed console — so this is sure to be a hit with the collector crowd.

As for the game that doesn’t come with the system, Metroid: Samus Returns is billed as a re-imagining of Metroid II: Return of Samus, which was originally released for the Game Boy in 1991. In addition to being a pretty cool looking 2D platformer, the game features support for two new Metroid amiibo, as well as the Samus Aran and Zero Suit Samus amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. line.

What do you think of this new Metroid-themed 3DS XL? Will you be picking one up along with a copy of Metroid: Samus Returns on Sept. 15 or (like me) are you holding out hope that Nintendo will do the smart thing and port the game over to Switch at some point?
